The Ruskin Community plan was developed by dedicated and enthusiastic individuals who volunteered their time for the future of their community. The plan was developed under the County's Community-Based Planning program which was formed to empower citizens to better understand and participate in planning for their neighborhoods and communities by providing them with access and involvement in the growth management process.

On August 8, 2005, the Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners
unanimously approved adopting the plan into the County's Comprehensive Plan

Renew Downtown Ruskin

The Ruskin Downtown posses a unique history and has a good existing infrastructure; both of which can be built upon to create a sustainable business, government and cultural center for a rapidly growing market area of substantially higher disposable income families.

This renewal program will include the design and construction of public facilities that will help to attract future private investors to the community, as well as requiring the design and construction of private structures that will in turn reinforce and compliment public investment.

All aspects of design should emphasize the pedestrian.

Common elements will include:

Pedestrian oriented urban streets
faced by attached urban buildings

A viable Main Street

A Town Square

Public on-street and off-street parking
A waterfront for people

Underground utility lines

Urban storm water and sewer systems

A sense of Arrival

A true "sense of place"
